Poker Night, Podcasting, and the Professor Goes to Parx

Just a few quick hits for this post:

1) We had our 2nd poker night for the class last week. I also opened it up to our ASA Club, and my colleague (Professor Lisa Grossbauer, pictured below) advertised it to her classes as well.
So we had a couple of guests with us -- total number of players this time was 13.

Our champion was John Thomas! Courtesy of my department this time, we again had $10 and $20 Amazon gift cards as prizes.

Towards the end of heads up play, John Thomas splashes the pot as he marches towards victory. Professor Lisa Grossbauer chats with her student who joined us. Note the huge stacks of prize money that has been brought to the table.

2) I have been invited to be a guest on the Thinking Poker Podcast! It's a show that I listen to, so I'm really excited about it. It'll also be my first time doing anything like it (i.e. being interviewed, for anything other than a job), so I'm pretty nervous. But mostly excited. Recording is tomorrow, and I will definitely blast it out when the episode is released.

Scheduling was tentative because Andrew Brokos, one of the hosts, was busy making a deep run at a World Poker Tour event at Maryland Live! Casino (exclamation point is part of their name). If he made the final table, then he would be playing tomorrow, and I was definitely rooting for him. Unfortunately, he ended up busting in 32nd, but at least he was well into the money at that point for $12k.

3) We've lived in the Philly area for over two years now, and I still hadn't made it out to a card room until just this past weekend. Lish was busy with back-to-back events for school on Friday night, so I went out to Parx. Here's my view while having a beer and waiting for my seat:

I've been trying to learn other games, so I played a bit of 6/12 OE (that is, a mix of Omaha hi/lo and Stud hi/lo, with $6 and $12 betting limits). Also it took me a while to get into that game, so I sat at 1/2 NL while waiting. Unfortunately I dusted off $200 on my 2nd hand in that game. Made $125 of it back at the OE game though.

Next up: Podcast recording tomorrow!
